In The Method, I describe the concept of the personal ecosystem. We often think of an ecosystem as where we live. But in reality, it is everything that surrounds and influences us and most importantly, the people we choose to share our lives with. Why? It’s simple: relationships shape our energy, our thinking, and ultimately who we become.
And this is where friendship becomes something much deeper than we usually describe. Aristotle spoke extensively about friendship in Nicomachean Ethics as something essential to a meaningful life and to our euphoria. His belief was that friendship is not based on convenience or pleasure alone, but is actually based on virtue. It is when two people wish the good for each other because of who the other person is.
And even more importantly: it is something you build together. You evolve together, as each one helps the other in this evolution.
They support you without limiting you, even through challenging times, and most importantly, they remind you of who you are when you forget. So if your values are growth, care, integrity, but your friendships do not reflect them, misalignment begins.
And slowly, energy decreases, and you think you lost a friend, but actually you moved closer to your core essence.
On the other hand, when friendship is aligned, you feel stronger. More like your authentic self. You are growing together. And perhaps this is where reflection begins:Are your friendships helping you evolve, or simply helping you stay where you are?
With care, Niki Smirni
